PURPLE SUNSET unfolded the late summer in 1945 right after the atomic bomb attacked on Nagasaki. In China, Japanese troop had been sweeping off innocent lives one village after another. Russian army moved in and stationed in Inner Mongolia, saved Chinese prisoner Yang from Japanese bullets. Russian army lost most troops to Japanese attack, Yang survived together with female Russian soldier Najia and her commander.

They stayed together and searched for the exit of the forest. Along the journey, they captured a young Japanese girl, Akiyok who intentionally leads them into a minefield and got Russian commander killed.

Akiyok didn’t forget to bring Najia and Yang to surrender, even though her life was saved by them along the journey together. Hate crawled under the cover of betrayal; friendships grew beyond the surface of caution and hope. Together, they marched again through the forest into dangers and unknown.

After the new of surrender broke Japanese mission, Akiyok experienced forgiveness and the true kindness of human heart. As 3 survivors breathed the joy of peace, Akiyok witnessed the sorrow of killing among her own kind.

"Purple Sunset" is a striking film with a deep anti-war message. It is one of 3 films about WWII directed by Feng Xiaoning with chilling number of the death during WWII.
