The Last Shangri-La
“The Last Shangri-La” - Terraced Rice Paddies and Irrigation
Exquisite heaven made by humans - where the water flows from
mountains through bamboo-pipe irrigation.
In the past, Yao ethnic group had to be chased down to Guangxi,
the end of southwestern region to escape from the push of Han
tribe. In order to settle down in this mountain with no water spring.
They drew on resources and came up with a way to survive-
building an irrigation system with bamboo Roaming about
mountains, they had to cultivate a slash-and-burnfield because of
water. Life as ethnic minority group in China was unstable all the
time. However, now that Yao ethnic group has settled down here,
there is no need to move around. Their way of life is so simple -
which is all about preserving water, preserving forests and
preserving nature, because they know how valuable they are.
Appreciation of the Mother Nature and water and the life in
harmony with them - that is the very momentum that lead Yao
ethnic group to their humble but fulfilled life.
No wonder this place is referred to as the last Shangri-La.
